REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE PROJECT OF INCREASING THE CAPACITY OF THE NUTRITIONAL CENTRE IN BUTANSINDA

  1. Title of the Programme: Increasing the Capacity of Nutritional Centre of the Parish of Butansinda.

BACKGROUND

The Nutritional centre was set up and implemented emerging from the idea of the Parishioners of Butansinda after experiencing bad consequences resulting from poor nutrition among Christians’ families, the surrounding and in the whole country after the 1994 turmoil and the economic crisis with the climate changes that heated the region.

25% of children under 5 years of age had symptoms of illness resulting from nutrition and lack of essential nutrients in the diet (malnutrition) – including Beriberi, Pellagra, Kwashiorkor, Rickets, and Scurvy …

We undertook the improvement of Nutrition awareness to be one of the effective forms of aid to 120 pregnant women, 210 infants and children as they are most at risk for inadequate dietary intake because their nutritional requirements are relatively high to families and their holders.

In this framework, for Parishioners decided to start a nutritional centre whereby Mothers, Children and pregnant women meet at the parish for trainings on improving nutrition and preparing a MODEL MEAL for every attendant.

This centre was started in order to reinforce the Diocesan goal “A Holy Soul in a Healthy Body”, as it is the Vision of the Bishop of Shyogwe, Dr Kalimba Jered, “Adveniat Regnum Tuum” translated in English as “Thy Kingdom come” stressing on a world where everyone is submissive to himself/ herself, to God, to his or her fellow, to neighbors and the nature as a whole; hence strives to have a plenty of life so as to serve God with all commitment and be useful congregants and citizens.

In order to meet the MDG’s goals, the Church longs to mitigate the worst child mortality rates whereby one in five Rwandan children die before their fifth year. Statistics from 2005 represent around 86/1000 live births, 2007. 181/1000, and recently in 2008 was around 6/1000[1]

This centre fits the MDG 5th goal of improving the maternal health:

More than 80% of Rwandans get their living from farming. The centre will provide to the neighboring communities (held their land under customary arrangements no formal documentation and limited food security) trainings to enhance model animal husbandry and will sensitize the communities about forestry and set up a small demonstration farm with gardens for crop production spearheaded by transforming our small lands into productive, high value, home and market oriented for efficient sustainability of families and the community as a whole. Hence this programme fits the long run “Vision 2020” concerning the strategy of developing HUMAN RESOURCES (Health and Education) so as to have Christians and society integrated with demographic, health and gender issues facing the Rwandan population.

This is of great use for the church in order to provide the spiritual growth and food for the body so as both the spiritual part and the flesh part of women, infants and families in large can contribute in soul preparation for the Eternal life to come.

The reasons of the Request for Assistance in increasing the capacity of the Nutritional Centre.

The idea of requesting for assistance in increasing the capacity of the Nutritional centre was overridingly taken into account after realizing that the parishioners’ capacity was not enough whereas the stakeholders of the centre, who need help and support risen beyond the parishioners’ existing resources.

Hence, after realizing problems resulting from not having a suitable house to operate into, we have build the house of the centre and longing to widen the buildings of the centre and strengthening the capacity of the Nutritional centre for feeding and trainings to women, children and the whole community with help and support from Christians in Butansinda and you, our esteemed partners and supporters.
